Overkill’s The Walking Dead game is officially cancelled

After some back and forth, it sounds like Overkill’s The Walking Dead is well and truly dead. This update comes from Skybound Entertainment, Robert Kirkman’s company that controls The Walking Dead brand, which has terminated its agreement with Starbreeze Studios regarding the use of The Walking Dead license.

„As of today, we have terminated our contract with Starbreeze Studios and will discontinue all efforts on Overkill’s The Walking Dead,” Skybound Games stated yesterday. „We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately Overkill’s The Walking Dead did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised. We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP.”

That certainly means that the console version of Overkill’s The Walking Dead is cancelled, but what about the PC version? Well, it’s going to be pulled from Steam, but Starbreeze has stated that they’re trying to find a way to deliver the promised second season of content for the game to the PC players who purchased the title under the promise that it will eventually feature that content. So far, though, no official update has been provided.

Previously, 505 Games, one of the publishers of Overkill’s The Walking Dead, stated on Twitter that the console version of the game was not cancelled: „We just wanted to clear the position on the Overkill’s The Walking Dead on console and confirm that the game has not been canceled, purely postponed whilst development is on-going,” says 505 Games. „We will share further news as soon as possible.”

That statement was seemingly designed to throw water on the fire, the flames of which first appeared when Sony sent out an e-mail (to those who preordered the game on PS4) stating that Overkill’s The Walking Dead had been cancelled and was now eligible for refunds.

„The publisher has notified us that the game is canceled,” reads the reported email from the PlayStation Store. „As a result, we have withdrawn the current pre-order from the PlayStation Store and will cancel all pr-orders. You will receive a refund to your original payment source within 5-7 business days.”

Truth be told, we would have been shocked to hear that Overkill’s The Walking Dead was living on. Not only is publisher Starbreeze in hot water regarding charges related to insider trading, but insider reports indicate that most people involved with The Walking Dead project knew that it was going to be a failure. It’s hard to imagine a way to justify the console release of the game at this time.

This is quite a sad story for nearly everyone involved, though. The Walking Dead had the potential to be an excellent take on the PayDay formula that capitalised on the universe of The Walking Dead, but it turned out to be a technical mess that is further burdened by dull and repetitive gameplay.

We’ll keep you informed if we hear any further details.
