Artist Jules Muck painted the mural of Kobe and his daughter, whose nickname is Gigi, at Pickford Market in Los Angeles on Sunday. The mural reads, “Kobe & Gigi. Forever Daddy’s Girl.”

“I feel that what he did with his fame as far as his camps and training and work with his daughter and other young people was pretty awesome especially that he died in that service,” Muck told CNN on Monday.

Muck said she was already on her way to paint a mural of Bryant when she heard about Gianna’s death and “felt it was important to include her.”

Public memorials honoring the father and daughter appeared across the Los Angeles area and even on the other side of the world.

OTTAWA – Venezuela’s embattled President Juan Guaidó said Canada’s support has been essential as he tries to take control of his country, but said more still needs to be done to restore democracy in his homeland.

Guaidó is recognized by the international community and by some elected officials inside Venezuela, but he doesn’t have the support of the country’s armed forces or courts, who remain loyal to Nicolás Maduro.

Guaidó arrived in Ottawa on Monday after stops in both London and Paris trying to garner more support from the international community. Speaking through a translator, he acknowledged he could face difficulties returning to his country

“Everything is a risk in Venezuela,” he said.

He said many of his staff were in hiding as they fear arrest, but it was important to keep fighting for change.

Venezuela has been in an economic and humanitarian crisis for several years, with Maduro’s socialist government leading to hyperinflation, price spikes and shortages of basic goods. Maduro took over from former president Hugo Chavez after his death in 2013. Maduro’s election in 2018 was seen as illegitimate, with opposition leaders jailed during the vote.

Millions of people have fled the country and thousands have been injured or killed in protests.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne continued to call for free and fair elections and for Maduro to step down.

“Make no mistake, the situation has gone from bad to worse, as a direct result of the actions of the Maduro regime,” Champagne said after a meeting with Guaidó on Monday. “We wish to see a peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela.”

Guaidó also met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau late in the afternoon and was recognized in the House of Commons after Question Period.

Following the flawed election in 2018, Maduro was encouraged by the international community to hold a new vote, but he refused. The country’s congress elected Guaidó president, using a provision in the nation’s constitution that allows for the president to be replaced. Maduro was also sworn in as president and his government doesn’t recognize Guaidó’s authority as legitimate.

Canada partnered with several South American countries in a new international body called the Lima Group that recognized Guaidó as president and has continued to push for Maduro to step down. Canada is the only G7 member of the Lima Group and has helped drive the effort. Canada also partnered with several of the countries in the Lima Group to call for an investigation of the Maduro regime from the International Criminal Court.

Maduro has said all of the international pressures are an attempt by the United States to instigate a coup in Venezuela. The U.S. is not a member of the Lima Group, but has said it supports its efforts.

Guaidó said Canada’s support has been invaluable to bringing about change.

“We thank the members of the Lima Group deeply. We thank Canada deeply.”

Despite the risk, he said he was travelling to western countries so the people of Venezuela would be heard.

“I am here to speak on behalf of the people of Venezuela who don’t have a voice.”

He said people inside Venezuela rely on media from outside the country, because there is so much censorship inside the nation’s borders.

Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world and the country was previously prosperous. Guaidó said that has all changed, he said people are starving due to food and water shortages. He said there have also been severe crackdowns on protesters speaking out against the regime and violence has become widespread.

“There have been 18,000 extrajudicial murders in our country.”

Canada’ official travel advisory recommends against any travel to the country.

The federal government has used Magnitsky Act sanctions against 113 members of Maduro’s regime, banning their travel and freezing assets they have in Canada.

Guaidó said they would like to see more sanctions to people who have aided the regime around the world.

“We want to sanction corrupt human rights abusers that have left Venezuela.”

Last summer, former foreign affairs minister Chrystia Freeland met with Cuban officials in an attempt to get them to put pressure on the Maduro regime. Champagne said he hopes to continue those efforts, but also plans to keep finding ways to push for change.

“We are going to be engaging not only as the Lima Group, but with others around the world,” he said. “You have to look at the humanitarian crisis going on, we think there will be six million people displaced by the end of the year.”

Champagne said a true settlement to the problem will have to come from the people of Venezuela, but said Canada would continue to be an ally to Guaidó.

“I would like to commend the president for his leadership and his courage.”

More than 200 survivors gathered at the former Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz, many probably for the final time, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of its liberation.

As rows over the make-up of the international guest list at the memorial ceremony threatened to overshadow Monday’s event, survivors who drew on harrowing memories of their incarceration warned the lessons from the atrocities sanctioned by Adolf Hitler’s administration and carried out often by ordinary Germans were in danger of being forgotten.

“The Holocaust was sponsored and was okayed by a government. Not only did they allow it to happen but they enforced it and encouraged regular people to become killers,” said Benjamin Lesser, a 92-year-old Polish-born Jew whose family was sent to Auschwitz in 1944. More than 1.1 million people were murdered at the camp, most of them Jews.

“I have returned so that I don’t forget any of the details of what happened to me, so I can keep the memories alive, and stop the world from acquiring amnesia,” he added, emphasising widespread concern over the rise in antisemitic attacks, in particular in Europe and North America.

The Auschwitz concentration camp complex in south-west Poland was the site of the largest mass murder in a single location in human history. While precise numbers are still debated, according to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, the German SS systematically killed at least 960,000 of the 1.1-1.3 million Jews deported to the camp. More people died at Auschwitz than at any other Nazi concentration camp.

When the camp was liberated on 27 January 1945, Soviet troops found grisly evidence of the horror. About 7,000 starving prisoners were found alive, and millions of items of clothing that once belonged to men, women and children were discovered along with 6,350kg of human hair.

In January 1942, the Nazi party had decided to roll out the “Final Solution”. Camps dedicated solely to the extermination of Jews had been created before, but this was formalised by SS Lieut-Gen Reinhard Heydrich in a speech at the Wannsee conference. The extermination camp Auschwitz II was opened in the same year.

Auschwitz II had the largest prisoner population of any of the three main camps on the site. In January 1942, the first chamber using lethal Zyklon B gas was built. Four further chambers were built, and these were used for systematic genocide up until November 1944.

Auschwitz was also the site of disturbing medical experimentation on Jewish and Roma prisoners, including practices such as castration and sterilisation. SS captain Dr Josef Mengele was one of the physicians practising there.

More than 7,000 Nazi personnel are thought to have served at Auschwitz but only a few hundred have been prosecuted for the crimes committed there. The pursuit of justice has not ceased, with German justice officials saying in 2013 that there were 30 surviving Auschwitz officials who should face prosecution. In 2019, a former guard at Stutthof concentration camp was placed on trial.

Presidents, prime ministers and royalty from around the world attended the commemorations, but not top world leaders, who visited Yad Vashem in Jerusalem earlier this week for another high-profile anniversary event.

Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), which has funded the return of more than 100 survivors and their families, said: “The emphasis here is on the survivors, as it should be, not on political leaders. There will probably not be another major anniversary as we’re losing so many of them.”

The survivors in attendance are aged between 75 – a woman who was born in the camp – and 101. They have travelled from all over the world, mainly North America and across Europe, Israel, South and Central America and Australia. A team of 50 therapists and medics were on hand to attend to the survivors and their also often elderly offspring.

At a dinner on Sunday held in a former tram depot in Kraków’s Jewish quarter, about 700 survivors and their families gathered to celebrate a revival of Jewish life around the world.

An unexpected guest, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who is Jewish and lost members of his family in the Holocaust, told the gathering the world should learn about humanity from the survivors whose stories of endurance and forgiveness were exemplary.

“You are truly amazing. You are strong and incredibly courageous. So you are an example that we should follow … The Holocaust is called the dark period in the history of humanity and you are the rays of sunshine that penetrated that darkness.”

David Lenga, 92, from Los Angeles, was among about 20 survivors who returned to Auschwitz on Sunday, walking silently through the notorious entrance gate bearing the words Arbeit macht frei (work sets you free) on a cold, sunny morning, taking his daughter Berta Kaplowitz with him for the first time on a tour of his former prison.

Lenga, who was 17 when he entered the camp in summer 1944, survived in part by making woollen jackets for SS guards out of camp blankets, for which he received extra food rations. He later went on to become a successful tailor in Beverly Hills. He said he had refused to let the Holocaust define his life, despite the fact it claimed 98 members of his family, with him and his father the only two to survive.

“I wanted to be better than that,” he said. “I’ve let my past go and concentrated instead on being a role model for my family, and have been helped by being blessed with a wonderful marriage, three beautiful daughters, seven grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.”

Angela Orosz, 75, from Montreal, stood in front of the former red-brick barracks and recalled her mother’s account of giving birth to her in secret on a top bunk in Auschwitz-Birkenau in December 1944.

“I have little choice but to come back, as the youngest survivor,” she said, clutching a bright pink shawl around her shoulders. “I grew up looking at photographs of relatives, and when I asked about them was told “he’s dead, she’s dead”. When I was older they told me the truth, that they had been murdered.

“I always claimed to my kids that I had suffered no trauma from having been here, until my daughter asked me why then, unlike other families, did I never throw potato peelings away? Because my mother had probably survived because of the peelings she had eaten and the goodness in them, she had been able to give birth to me and so I had survived, so of course the survival instinct I inherited from her made me always do the same.”

News of the shocking deaths of basketball star Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others, continues to reverberate around the globe on Monday. Bryant and the others died Sunday when the helicopter they were on crashed into a hillside in Calabasas, California. But the American athlete was mourned far beyond the borders of his home country.

His Italian home feels the loss

Bryant lived in Italy as a child while his father, Joe Bryant, played basketball there, and his death hit many in the country hard. Luca Vecchi, the mayor of the northern Italian town of Reggio Emilia, where Bryant lived, mourned the player in numerous Facebook posts.

“Kobe Bryant grew up here and was for all of us a Reggiano,” Vecchi wrote in a post. “A basketball legend that all our city will remember forever with affection and gratitude.”

Philippines: House of Kobe court

A new basketball court in Valenzuela City, in Metro Manila, Philippines, dubbed “House of Kobe,” had just opened hours before the helicopter crash. It was already decorated with wall-sized murals honoring Bryant, Yahoo Sports reports, but a new mural featuring Bryant and Gianna is being added on Monday. Fans are leaving candles and messages in honor of the crash victims.

Sunny skies, ideal temperatures, and lots of fat tire fun marked the 5th annual Borealis Fat Bike World Championship, which went down last weekend in Crested Butte, Colorado. This year’s trimmed-down event kicked off with an evening of—occasionally treacherous—fat bike polo, on a closed down block of the famed ski town’s main drag, Elk Avenue. The following morning, festivities headed to the edge of town for the main event, which consisted of a 3-lap fun race, and 5-lap, very much tongue-in-cheek World Championship affair. Both events were contested on a 5-mile, packed-snow circuit that traced a clockwise loop around the valley floor between town and Mount Crested Butte. Here’s a look at some of the highlights.

Biden’s foreign policy centers around restoring America’s global leadership and alliances.

He argues that will allow him to repair global institutions, defend the international rules of the road, confront China — which he increasingly cites as a priority — and rein in Russia.

Biden sounds more prepared to support foreign intervention and free trade deals than his leading rivals, though less than some Democrats (including himself) in cycles past.

Key policies: Biden wants a cautious withdrawal from Afghanistan, more military aid to Ukraine and sanctions on those responsible for China’s mass detentions in Xinjiang.

Between the lines: His pitch boils down to, essentially, everything you liked about Obama’s foreign policy and less of what you didn’t.

Sanders is more likely to condemn American imperialism than launch into Biden-style celebrations of American greatness — though he also emphasizes re-establishing U.S. moral authority.

Sanders has made common cause with leftists around the world for decades, sometimes controversially.

But his foreign policy platform is not as radical as some might imagine. He supports U.S. membership in NATO (though, like Trump, he wants allies to foot more of the bill) and won’t rule out using military force (though he sets a high bar).

Key policies: Sanders wants to scale back the U.S. drone program, drastically cut the military budget and increase foreign aid. He hates most proposed trade deals, including the Obama-era Trans-Pacific Partnership and Trump’s NAFTA replacement (which Warren backed).

Warren contends that America has hurt itself and the world by promoting globalization, big corporations and a model of capitalism that drives inequality and resentment.

She’s skeptical of the IMF, wants to break up “multinational monopolies” and “crack down on tax havens.”

Warren plans to slash the Pentagon’s budget and increase the State Department’s. Like Sanders, Warren frames many U.S. interventions as harmful to the countries concerned and the Americans funding them.

Key policies: Warren says she’d need a clear national security imperative and congressional approval to use military force. She has ruled out “first use” of a nuclear weapon and vowed not to appoint donors as ambassadors.

Between the lines: Warren and Sanders have similar diagnoses in terms of the failures of U.S. foreign policy, and many of the same prescriptions.

Sanders places more emphasis on righting historical wrongs and on the global struggle against injustice and “oligarchy.”

Warren, meanwhile, says America needs to renew itself at home first if it hopes to lead abroad.

Common ground:

All three want to return to the Paris Climate Accord and spur international action on climate change.

They all support a two-state solution in the Middle East and think the U.S.-Saudi partnership must be scaled back.

China is the world’s second-largest arms producer, behind the US, a Swedish research institute announced on Monday.

New research from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) shows that four Chinese arms groups generate sufficient sales to be ranked among the world’s top 20 weapons sellers. The four groups have combined sales worth $54.1 billion (€49.1 billion) in 2017.

Read more: Can Chinese weapons contribute to peace in Africa?

“This research represents the most comprehensive picture of Chinese companies’ weapons production to date,” SIPRI announced on their website. They also noted that the new figures are likely an underestimate, given the lack of transparency in China.

The vast majority of the Chinese munitions sold every year are bought by the different branches of China’s People’s Liberation Army.

In the previous report published in 2017, SIPRI placed China at sixth place in the world. These new figures place it ahead of Russia. In the past, China was a major importer of weapons from Russia.

SIPRI ranks individual companies rather than countries. Three Chinese arms manufacturers would be placed in the top 10.

Kobe Bryant’s death sent shockwaves around the world, Sunday.

It was also felt heavy in the soccer community, both in the U.S. and abroad.

Bryant was often seen wearing a Barcelona jersey, speaking of his love for the club and also attended several U.S. Women’s National team matches, most recently the team’s kick-off to their victory tour in August at the Rose Bowl.

As word of his death began to spread, several clubs around the world offered their condolences, from Chelsea to Manchester United to AC Milan, Barcelona and the local Major League Soccer clubs (Galaxy and LAFC).

Real Madrid had a moment of silence before the start of Monday’s training session in honor of Bryant.

International stars Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho also posted twitter messages for Bryant.

Bryant attended MLS Media Day earlier this month at Banc of California Stadium to kick off a new partnership with Body Armor sports drink and MLS.

Chicago Fire forward CJ Sapong spoke about meeting with reporters the following day and posted a tribute Sunday.

Galaxy midfielder Jonathan dos Santos, his brother Giovani, David Beckham, Franceso Totti, Carli Lloyd, Gyasi Zardes, Cobi Jones, Diego Maradona, Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba and Megan Rapinoe are also some of the players to post tributes.

As Kristy Weidner dealt with her marriage ending, she wanted to make a change. She considered volunteering for the international medical organization Doctors Without Borders. Instead, she and her former supervisor co-founded the Village Center for Holistic Therapy because she saw a local need for services aimed at improving one’s overall well-being.

In 2011, Weidner, a social worker residing in Shaler, and her business partner, psychologist Victor Barbetti, opened their West End practice. In 2016, they opened a second location along Glenshaw’s Mt. Royal Boulevard.

Therapists combine a talk-based approach with additional areas of expertise, such as dance, yoga, meditation, art, music, pet therapy and acupuncture.

As the practice’s clinical director, Weidner, 40, said that clients are never pressured into trying therapies that don’t appeal to them.

“We really have a person-centered approach where we say, ‘You’re the driver of this vehicle; I’m the passenger. You’re going to have my support and encouragement. We’re going to throw a bunch of things at the wall and see what sticks.’’’

Sarah Hobbs, Village center program coordinator, believes Weidner’s methods are amazing.

“She’s always encouraging and full of new ideas on how to make the world we live in a better place,” said Hobbs. “She has taught me that there is always someone who needs your help, and we can always help those around us, without question. She also has an attitude of wanting the best for everyone and trying to add peace and well-being to all.”

Weidner is a 200-hour certified yoga instructor and mindfulness meditation teacher. Village Center for Holistic Therapy also specializes in leading yoga classes for people dealing with trauma and anxiety. In September 2019, Weidner opened inJOY Studio for meditation and yoga upstairs from the Shaler Village Center. For session information, visit www.kristyjoyweidner.com/.

“At my heart of social work, I wanted a place where people felt like they belonged, where they weren’t shunned because of their mental illness or their class. Just a place that was open for everybody,” she said.

She has worked hard, she said, to ensure that her Village Center is able to accept Medicare and Medicaid.

Weidner taught 16- through 21-year-olds at Pressley Ridge School for the Deaf after receiving a bachelor’s in education of persons with hearing loss from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She often incorporates her American Sign Language knowledge into yoga workshops. At Pressley Ridge, Weidner focused on educating students who are deaf and diagnosed as emotionally disturbed or on the autism spectrum. The Shaler Area graduate always had a psychology interest, but thought that studying deaf education would serve as a good “stepping stone.”

She earned a master’s in social work from the University of Pittsburgh and later worked as a Pittsburgh Mercy Behavioral Health outpatient mental health counselor serving both hearing and deaf clients.

Weidner has given back to the community since 2010 by facilitating support groups at the Highmark Caring Place for elementary schoolers experiencing grief.

In her letter nominating Weidner for the Pittsburgh Magazine 40 Under 40 award, which she won, Highmark Caring Place manager Andrea Lurier wrote that Weidner helped a group of children enamored with the “Minecraft” video game process their grief.

“The next thing I knew, Kristy was bringing in enormous boxes, paint, glitter, glue, fabric and more. Kristy honored their interest and helped them build a “Minecraft world” that included the Caring Place, heaven and a bridge between the two so the children could symbolically stay connected to their loved ones.”

Through Village Center, Weidner has hosted supply drives for Alle-Kiski Area HOPE Center, Project STAR, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and North Hills Community Outreach.

A Spanish photographer has won the Judges Prize in this year’s Art of Building international photography contest, run by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Pedro Luis Ajuriaguerra Saiz, a professional photographer from northern Spain, depicted Hemisferic, the science museum in Valencia designed by Santiago Calatrava.

Entitled “Fish”, his photograph (above) captured the building and its reflections to reimagine it as a living creature.

The other winner of the contest was Alexandr Bormotin, from Ivanovo in Russia, whose arresting depiction of a new underground train station in Moscow – called “Metrostation” – took home the Public Choice Award.

This category is decided by online voting by the global public, and Metrostation got more than 30% of all votes.

Each winner gets a £1,500 prize.

In its 10th year, the contest saw photographers from more than 100 countries submitting thousands of pictures of the built world. The contest celebrates the creativity of the construction industry and the passion of the people who work in it.

Twelve photographers reached the final, where their work was voted upon by the public.

Caroline Gumble, Chief Executive at the CIOB, said: “So many images managed to create a sense of mood and place, it was a delight to judge the competition. The winning photographs both show the beauty and harmony in great architecture and is a reminder of the impact on our emotions and well-being that well-designed buildings can achieve.”

More than half of the areas around the world suitable for growing grapes used for wine could become unsuitable for the purpose in 80 years due to climate change, according to a new study.

A study published Monday in the National Academy of Sciences’ online journal said that 56 percent of wine-growing regions could be unsuitable by 2100 should the Earth’s climate warm 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit in that time.

The study also found that such losses could be cut in half should wine growers diversify their crops and move different species of grapes to different regions — however, such an effort would involve farmers in regions that have specialized in single varietals for hundreds of years to learn new farming methods for new crops.

And even that method becomes less effective under models in which the climate warmed more than 3.6 degrees, according to the study’s authors.

“Conversations in Europe have already begun about new legislation to make it easier for major regions to change the varieties they grow,” study co-author Elizabeth Wolkovich, an associate conservation services professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, told USA Today.

“But growers still must learn to grow these new varieties,” she continued. “That’s a big hurdle in some regions that have grown the same varieties for hundreds and hundreds of years, and they need consumers who are willing to accept different varieties from their favorite regions.”

The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday will vote to allow the city to place bids to bring the 2025 World Police and Fire Games and the 2023-26 NCAA men’s and women’s basketball regional playoffs to Birmingham.

Birmingham last hosted the NCAA playoffs in 2008. In 2008, officials were unsure about the future of the playoffs in Birmingham, citing the age of Legacy Arena. March Madness came to the city 10 times between 1995 and 2003.

City officials credited the renovation of Legacy Arena and construction of Protective Stadium as driving forces behind the decisions to bid on these events.

“Due to the size and condition of the arena, we lost [the NCAA playoffs]. But, now with the huge renovation and the new stadium, we are putting ourselves back on the map,” said District 3 councilor Valerie Abbott. Abbott chairs the Budget and Finance Committee.

If the city wins the bid, it will be the first time Birmingham has hosted the women’s playoffs.

If approved by the council, the city will place its bid with the NCAA on Feb. 3. Bids will be awarded in fall. City officials have not made final a budget for NCAA bids. The organization reimburses costs of host cities.

The World Police and Fire Games are open to active duty and retired law enforcement. Athletes compete in traditional sports like archery, baseball, basketball, soccer and volley. There are some non-traditional events like stair race, mud run, dragon boat and ultimate firefighter.

World Police and Fire Games will be bigger than the 2021 World Games, with an expected 10,000 athletes traveling from around the world to compete. Around 3,600 athletes are expected to compete in The World Games.

Abbott said more athletes coming to Birmingham means more tax revenue and more exposure for Birmingham.

“The World Games will be small compared to the Police and Fire Games,” Abbott said. “I think we can use The World Games as a practice round for the World Police and Fire Games.”

The city will place a bid in March. The bids will be awarded soon after.

If the city wins the bid, it will pay $800,000 to the World Police and Fire Games, then $500,000 every year for four years. Those payments will begin in July 2021.

You’re looking at the world’s largest airport fire fighting machine.

And as fire trucks on airports are much larger than normal ones, then that means this is the world’s largest full stop. Why are they so large? Well, firstly, they can be. After all, length and width are hardly considerations in the wide open spaces of an airport. Secondly, they really need to be.

Potentially needing to douse the flames of a large airliner and all the fuel it carries, this new NAFFCO Falcon 8 can carry 16,000 litres of water and 1920 litres of fire-retardant foam. Dubai-based NAFFCO unveiled the new vehicle last week at the Intersec 2020 trade show. Its considerable bulk is hauled around by two engines with an output of around 1400bhp.

The Falcon is just the latest in a long line of intriguing fire-fighting machines – here’s our pick of the weird, wonderful and adaptable world of fire fighting vehicles:

Technology and data are finally shaking up the world of commercial real estate, allowing the industry to make more informed decisions, respond quicker to consumer trends, and take on more complex projects, says consultancy Altus Group.

The Toronto-based real estate firm said Monday that for the first time, a majority of 400 global commercial real estate executives polled said they are seeing the disruptive impact of technology on the sector.

The shift comes as the wave of investment and startups in recent years are starting to show results and shift perspectives, said Altus CEO Bob Courteau.

“There’s a bunch of really aggressive companies that came in to real estate globally, and they came in with a whole different view of the importance of data and technology.”

New companies, and new executives at existing ones, have caused a significant shift in thinking on the role in technology in the space, he said.

“The orientation of the management teams of historical commercial real estate was to put their investments in the ground, not into things like data and technology.”

The change is stark at the executive level, where 80 per cent of 350 firms surveyed now say they have a chief data officer or equivalent senior executive, compared with only 44 per cent four years ago.

“The last couple or three (years) has seen an explosion in change,” said Courteau.

WeWork may be the most well-known company in the space, but new entrants number in the thousands, by some estimates.

Real Estate giant Brookfield Asset Management, through their venture arm Brookfield Technology Partners, has recently invested in companies such as leasing software provider VTS, automated door hardware provider Latch, and contractor software provider Building Connect.

Meanwhile, real estate service provider Jones Lang LaSalle IP, Inc. launched a US$100 million venture fund in 2018 to invest in the property technology, or “proptech” space, joining an increasingly crowded field.

In Canada, the tech sector has seen numerous startups enter the space including Yuhu, which offers software for building managers, Breather, an on-demand office space provider, Lane, a mobile-focused tool for tenants, and MapYourProperty, which provides analytics for land development.

Early proptech entrants were focused more on efficiencies, like lower energy costs or automating repetitive tasks, but with the wealth of data available there’s the potential to improve future planning and tackle some of the more difficult decisions, said Courteau.

“What am I going to build, what’s the cost to build, what are the consumer trends, what are the upcoming neighbourhoods, how do I create a mixed environment…this is a data rich environment that can have a significant impact on the value of this new building that you’re about to build.”

The survey noted that technology has enabled numerous disruptive trends including multi-family co-living, a sort of dorm-style arrangement with small private bedroom and shared living and kitchen space, as well as co-working spaces and new models for real estate on the retail side to provide more brand exposure and entertainment options.

While adoption has been slower in Canada, many global markets have also started to take advantage of online marketplaces to cut out intermediaries in lending, investment, leasing, and property exchanges. The survey notes that the explosion of proptech firms likely means a significant consolidation is pending, with most Canadian executives polled expecting consolidation within the next 12 to 24 months.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 27, 2020.

2019 may have been fraught with volatile oil prices, but the world’s largest oil traders made a killing last year, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

“By all accounts, 2019 was among the best years ever for the energy trading industry,” Marco Dunand, chief executive of energy trader Mercuria Energy Group LTD, said.

Mercuria is one of the world’s largest oil traders.

Other traders including Vitol and Trafigura reaped the benefits of a turbulent 2019 as well—but Shell and BP, which have in-house trading units, deal in even more crude oil, trading 13 million and 10.9 million barrels of crude oil per day.

BP and Shell raked in billions last year on their oil trading arms, with Shell reportedly making $1 billion off fuel-oil trading due to the IMO2020 changes.

Gunvor, who trades 2.5 million barrels a day, said that 2019 was “up there among the best years ever.”

Trafigura, who already reported its 2019 results as their fiscal year ended in September, saw a record year for gross profits of $1.7 billion, trading 6 million barrels daily. Vitol—the largest oil trader that’s not part of Big Oil, is expected to report nearly $2 billion in earnings.

The reason for the banner year in the oil trading business was, according to senior traders and top executives interviewed by Bloomberg, a rather fortuitous combination of oil market influences. Supply outages in Venezuela and Iran boosted premiums that traders could charge to refineries. Then came the Russian tainted oil debacle. Then, Saudi Arabia’s supply disruption in the wake of a terrorist attack on Aramco’s infrastructure that temporarily took offline 5 million bpd. Then, there was the IMO2020 rules.

All these disruptions created a perfect money-making storm.

For BP, Shell, and Total—the do-it-alls of the oil industry, including trading—the money made on the trading side is a welcome addition to the balance sheet as oil and gas prices falter.

A young child and her mother have been pulled out alive from under a collapsed building as Turkey began winding down its rescue operation following an earthquake that killed at least 38 people.

The 6.8-magnitude quake struck in eastern Turkey on Friday evening, killing 34 people in Elâzığ province and four in the neighbouring province of Malatya. More than 1,600 others were hurt, Turkey’s AFAD disaster authority said.

Rescue operations had largely been concluded by late Sunday but rescuers were still searching for three people in Elâzığ, about 550km (340 miles) east of Ankara, the interior minister, Süleyman Soylu, said.

“We are still hopeful, we haven’t lost hope,” he told broadcaster CNN Turk.

Epicentre of deadly Turkey earthquake

Those rescued included a 35-year-old woman and her daughter, two, in the Mustafa Pasa district of Elâzığ. Rescuers who heard their screams took several hours to reach them in temperatures as low as -4C (24.8F), state media said.

“Can you hear me?” television footage showed a rescuer calling to the mother. “We are coming. We will save you.”

“Please get me out, I cannot stand it any more. Get my daughter, I am nothing without my kid,” she replied before being safely lifted out on a crane.

The woman’s husband was among those killed.

In a nearby neighbourhood, rescue workers stood on mountains of debris where the quake had split an apartment building in half. They dug through using buckets, blowing whistles to signal they needed silence to listen for trapped people.

Rescue teams, supported by thousands of emergency workers from other provinces and by hundreds of volunteers, had pulled 45 people from under the rubble since the quake, AFAD said.

The health minister, Fahrettin Koca, said 104 people were being treated in hospital.

AFAD said it had sent more than 10,400 tents, 17,000 beds, 37,000 blankets, heaters and food supplies to affected areas and Soylu said AFAD had received 7m lira (£900,000) from a public donation campaign.

AFAD said 1,521 buildings had been damaged, which included 645 with severe damage and 76 collapsed structures. In a statement, it said it had transferred 3m lira in emergency aid to each of the municipalities in Elâzığ and Malatya.

It warned residents not to enter damaged buildings because of the danger of collapse and further aftershocks, of which it said there had been 844.

Fans of basketball legend Kobe Bryant gathered at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore on Sunday afternoon, in the hours after his tragic death, to pay their respects to the Philly-area native.

Tributes included a pair of Bryant’s jerseys – one from Lower Merion and one from his NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers – along with flowers, candles, and dedicated basketballs featuring messages of love and support.

Here’s a look at the scene at the school:

Bryant, who attended Lower Merion from 1992 to 1996, took the Philly basketball scene by storm during his four seasons with the Aces, leading the team to a state championship and earning Naismith High School Player of the Year honors during his senior year.

The school officially named its gymnasium after Bryant with a special dedication ceremony in 2010, and Bryant donated more than $400,000 to the school district, at the time the largest donation in school district history. Images of Bryant adorn the inside of the gymnasium.

The Lower Merion School District issued a statement Sunday about Bryant’s passing:

The Lower Merion School District community is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of one our most illustrious alumni, Kobe Bryant.

Mr. Bryant’s connection to Lower Merion High School, where he played basketball prior to joining the NBA, has raised the profile of the high school and our District throughout the world. Our school community will always be grateful for his ongoing generosity to his alma mater, including his dedication of our Kobe Bryant Gymnasium and his support of our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams.

Gregg Downer coached Mr. Bryant from 1992 to 1996. Mr. Bryant led the team to the 1996 State Championship. Downer said that he is completely shocked and devastated by this news adding, “Aces Nation has lost its heartbeat.”

The entire Lower Merion School District community sends its deepest condolences to Mr. Bryant’s family. Our basketball teams will no doubt pay tribute to Mr. Bryant as this season continues, but at this time, as a District, we will concentrate on supporting those in our community – including Coach Downer and English teacher Jeanne Mastriano – whom Mr. Bryant credited for sparking his love of writing.
